NYSED/NYLA/SSL School Library Services Summit 2014 Wiki
Mission Enable all New York State students to be college and career ready by strengthening the critical role of school librarians in teaching and learning.
Vision Through a partnership of professional library associations, school library systems, state education offices, educators, and community members, a framework and plan will be created to ensure all students have access to relevant resources and a certified school librarian in every school.
The partnership will ensure district-wide awareness of the important impact of school libraries on student achievement by articulating expectations through:
Instructional Standards or Standards that drive instruction (CCSS, IFC, AASL, etc.)
Providing program evaluation tools,
Using instructional best practices that are research-based,
Advocating for increased funding to strengthen school library system support,
Securing funding to enhance materials support based on student need,
Encouraging sustained professional development for all library and education leaders on the use of school libraries to improve student college and career readiness.
The purpose of a New York State Education Department/School Library Services Summit with the New York Library Association (NYLA), Section of School Librarians (NYLA/SSL), School Library System Association (SLSA), and other invited educational leaders in New York, would be to share ideas on actions we can engage in to support increased student achievement within the context of school library services, as they relate to curriculum, instruction, assessments and professional development and the proposed Regents Research Requirement for graduation.
The goal is to develop consensus around 4 to 6 mutually agreed detailed recommendations and supported action steps to present to NYSED Senior Managers, that could be achieved within the 6, 12, to 18 months following the Summit. The desired effect of a NYSED/School Library 2014 Summit would be to raise the visibility of school library support of student achievement with NYSED Senior Managers, to obtain the necessary NYSED resources if possible, and to accelerate progress towards accomplishing the agreed upon action steps.
